Let me first say that I have not been this excited for a sequel in a long time.
Sure, there were a lot of great things about the first movie – it was a great breakout role for Aaron Johnson, it made Nicholas Cage relevant again, and it was a completely new, honest, and shocking “superhero” movie that was a welcome break from the actual superhero movies– but anyone is lying to you if they say their favorite thing about the movie was not Hit Girl. Chloe Grace Moretz stole the show as the butt-kicking Mindy Macready, a filthy mouthed young girl that took on an entire mob. The controversy that surrounded her role, mainly focusing on then 11 year old Moretz being “sexualized” and uttering words she would never say at home, did little to stifle the hype around the movie. In fact, those were some of the things that audiences loved most about Hit Girl. Not only did we get a female superhero (which are rare enough), she was a girl superhero that blew beyond our expectations. There’s little doubt that she will steal the show again.
The movie will feature the return of Johnson, Mintz-Plasse, and Moretz, and additionally will be bolstered by the likes of Jim Carrey, John Leguizamo, and Donald Faison. Mintz-Plasse returns renamed as The Mother Fucker, seeking revenge for the death of his father, while Carrey is almost unrecognizable as Colonel Stars and Stripes, the leader of a new superhero gang. Carrey’s character will probably have tons of one-liners that will rival that of Hit Girl’s, and I can easily foresee some delightful banter between the two. There is obviously much to be excited for, but if Hit Girl is anything like her character in the first movie, I will already be ordering my purple wig for next Halloween on the way out of the theater.
