The first trailer for the much anticipated Star Trek Into Darkness has been released today. J.J. Abrams‘ sequel to his well received first entry into the franchise sees the crew returning home only to find their world being torn apart. Benedict Cumberbatch, of Sherlock fame and as of yet the Star Trek villain of unconfirmed identity (Khan?!), is very much in command from the outset. Narrating the trailer, Cumberbatch’s controlled and deliberate words of warning are especially foreboding amidst the chaos and destruction that show him to be highly capable of following through.
The official synopsis:
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.
As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
From the trailer it seems that all of the original crew will be reprising their roles. Interestingly, fellow Brit Alice Eve gets a particularly decent amount of precious screen time for a teaser considering she’s a new addition. Also considerably telling is that Cumberbatch can be seen smugly positioned in the captain’s chair, complete with Starfleet insignia. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, and Simon Pegg round out the rest of the familiar faces.
Star Trek Into Darkness will release in 3D and IMAX on May 17th, 2013.
