Which Epic Battle Will Be The Most Epic?

The superhero movies of 2012 have come and gone, and now we’re left to wait and wonder for what’s next. We saw an impressive array with this year’s slate already – The Amazing Spider-Man successfully rebooted the series, The Avengers broke open a wider Marvel universe to come, and The Dark Knight Rises closed out a legendary journey with a bang. That’s a pretty big year for the superhero blockbuster. But big can always go bigger, and if there’s anything Hollywood can be counted on it’s to do just that. So what’s on the horizon and how can they possibly take it to the next level?

Shane Black’s Iron Man 3, with Robert Downey Jr. reprising the role, is currently still filming. But one thing has come to light, and if true, might be the most insane wide scale super powered battle we’ll see yet. The last iteration of Tony Stark’s suit that we’ve seen was the Mark VII in The Avengers. This one was already a marked improvement from the previous models seen in the two Iron Man franchise movies. Avengers director Joss Whedon wanted the training wheels off for his version and not only added jetpack-like thrusters to eliminate the need for repulser hand stabilizing, but also developed the targeting system that enabled Tony to suit up while in free fall.

Iron Man 3 is stepping things up with another systemic enhancement. The latest movie will supposedly feature Stark gearing up with the Mark XLVII (47). Yes, the new improvement will apparently allow Tony to control other Iron Man suits from his onboard HUD cockpit – all 39 suits in between 7 and 47! Extremis nanotech will feature heavily in this third installment’s story, serving to enhance both his tech and those of his many enemies. I guess having 40 Iron Men somewhat evens the score. It kind of makes sense to have decoys though, besides wanting them for additional firepower. But if he needs this much backup, I can’t imagine what he’ll be up against on this one. The only thing we know for sure is that it’ll be explosive. Just how big will be the question.

Fittingly, while Marvel will boast yet another group melee blowout, DC will again favor a more head to head confrontation. The new retelling of Superman in Man of Steel is said to be unlike anything we’ve seen before. One such aspect will be a particular bout of savagery inflicted upon him. We’ve seen Superman in a fight or in battle many times before; most of the time he comes out victorious, sometimes less so. But this Superman is just coming into his own in this story, so he’ll not only lose in a supposed fight with Kryptonian villain Faora, but will be completely demolished by the end of it.

Taken straight from the message boards:

At first they’re not as powerful but later on as she applies her fight training and adapts them to her powers, she gives Superman one of the worst beatings a hero has faced on camera… She “Doomsdays” him… literally pulverizing him with precision and lethal strength with hitting pressure-points, nerves and even just outclasses Supes in bare knuckle and gives Supes a severe beat down…he’s total agony this entire time, bloody and broken and barely gets away. My buddy doesn’t know at all how Superman defeats these guys eventually but he did say that Superman in this film gets hurt a lot more easily than Routh’s pre-crisis Superman…the military can hurt him too but Faora pretty much nearly kills him in hand to hand.

I could actually see that, kind of a way to humanize him. You take for granted that Superman is invulnerable, but he’s not necessarily the more skilled combatant. He rarely is in point of fact. The nuances of fighting just happen to be less important when you’re a powerhouse. But on level playing ground, especially against someone with military training, of which Superman has none since he grew up on Earth, the edge could easily go to the better equipped. But if this is to be believed, this is in line to be a more vicious and brutal beating than Bane’s smackdown on The Dark Knight. And while we already saw how Batman did it, it’ll be interesting to see how the other half of the World’s Finest rallies to outmatch his adversaries in the end.

Clearly, both movie battles are raising the stakes from their predecessors. The Avengers were a team, Iron Man will have an entire squadron. Batman suffered a back-breaker, Superman will be torn down to within an inch of his life. So which battle do you think will be the most epic?

Update: We may not have that long to wait after all…
