tUnE-yArDs are probably one of the strangest artists on the Coachella 2012 lineup. The band consists solely of Merrill Garbus and whoever she has backing her up on tour (most recently a bassist and two saxophones). The whole act is made up of Merrill’s insanely creative use of a microphone running through loop pedals. She constructs the songs from scratch herself live, using the mic to pick up her hitting drums and her strange vocal layers. Then, after the loops are made, she uses the triggers as another instrument while she keeps rhythm with two drums around her and sings. Wild to see in action.
Their album W h o k i l l came out in April 2011, and features the song below. tUnE-yArDs in the studio is a whole other ball game, with Merrill going nuts with production effects. I love it.
